Only catastrophes change societies. Look at how China boomed because of the pandemic, its current accounts surging with revenue as it sold goods to the rest of the world. The pandemic exposed that only societies that actually build things will ultimately succeed and survive. All of our ‘service industries’ i.e serving coffee and travelling the world for ‘experiences’ are no help at all when push comes to shove. China is also struggling economically now, but is rapidly shifting to more exports of its goods, from its juggernaut industrial sector. It literally is ‘the world’s factory’. We made it that, we have ourselves to blame if we don’t like that we’re now the new developing world, who build nothing.
