If you have Netflix, check out Derren Brown’s ‘Miracle’, a recording of his latest live show. The show itself, as the name says, is about human suggestibility, and miracles, and Brown explores things like faith healing in highly entertaining ways, by actually performing faith healing as part of the show. Not just to say it’s crap, he shows it actually works, but maybe not for the reason people often claim. Here’s one of the striking moments from the show, where he shows how a woman with bad eyes can suddenly be made to see clearly. And then even more funnily, he takes a sceptic from the crowd and renders him unable to read a thing. Brown doesn’t use stooges, which is a common response to the amazing things he does, he’s enormously skilled, and understanding how he does it can teach us profound things about being human.
