One of the reasons the metoo movement disturbs me is that it often identifies behaviours in men, but has no insight or even interest as to the cause of these behaviours. Men, like women, can carry emotional issues for a long time, and it can come out in their behaviour. But it’s very common to mock the behaviours instead, and put them down to a sort of general dickheadedness, or some gender studies fantasy construct, like ‘toxic masculinity’. Most of us go through life doing our best to make sense of it all. But the ways we do that won’t always look the same. The righteous moral categories we apply to people are terribly damaging to the complexity of human experience.
