In my childhood, the old were not the wealthiest part of society. They were the people buying Iced Vo-Vos for a weekly treat at the supermarket. We refuse to notice or acknowledge the fundamental re-writing of society’s rules, in our own lifetime. Society’s hardest and most important work is young adults raising the next generation. That’s where wealth should be concentrated, to afford that work. Historically that was the case. Not today. Now these same parents can’t even afford to rent. That wealth became a booty for the old, to live fabulous, eternal lifestyle retirements. It’s not the fault of the old. It’s because we abandoned the idea of ageing. Nobody is ‘old’ now, nobody passes the baton to the next generation. All of us now ‘live our best life’, to our last breath. There is no longer a circle of life. We’re all eternal adolescents, rock stars can be over 80 years of age.
