A common thing now is for tragedy to be used for fundraising. I notice here that the GoFundMe was up and running almost as soon as the tragedy happened, ditto for a recent young death here locally, where the first many knew the tragedy had happened was when they were asked to chip in money, with a fundraising goal that was way beyond costs for a funeral. I find it disgusting. There’s not any sense of decency, I was taken by the complaint of somebody who’d donated to a recent GoFundMe that there’d been not one acknowledgement to all of those who donated. Not a thank you, not a communication of any kind. Probably weeping selfie videos uploaded to Instagram to milk the whole tragedy for even more attention. Me me me, adults with the social skills of young teenagers. By contrast my own mum lost a colleague this week from her early teaching years. Her first priority? To find the addresses of the extended family, so she could send them a card.
