Teenagers’ bedrooms are maybe the perfect way to change how we think about climate change. Their habits create their HABITat, a much better word than ‘environment’. Environmental politics never really gets traction I think because the idea of the environment itself, as some sort of container we live inside, is so flawed. (Darwin himself never really used the concept, for that reason.) The struggle to get a teenager to change their room - their habitat - is the same struggle as getting social change on climate change. People don’t live ‘in’ space, they inHABIT the world, with their habits. It’s those habits we need to understand, and to try to change. Starting with our habit of not actually occupying any space at all - our travel culture.
