Farming was supposed to give greater predictability and abundance for humans. It hasn’t worked, because it focused on the farm level, rather than landscape level. We see the result now, farms destroyed by drought and sometimes flood, both things that can only be understood at a landscape level. What’s interesting to me is that the idea of designing whole landscapes removes the need to distinguish between human settlement (including farming), and the ‘environment’. There’s just landscape, actively and continuously shaped for our and animal’s and plant’s mutual benefit.
