Cars give you the freedom to go pretty much anywhere in a country. But that freedom bites back much harder against you than for you. Once people can use vehicles to go anywhere, there's nothing any more that makes their home - where they live - important. Nobody needs to make work or schools or shopping available there, you can always drive to access them. In reality cars increasingly move slower and slower in traffic congestion, meaning the little freedom they did give you is also being stripped away. Cars are the number one way we enslave ourselves, in our suburbs devoid of any social or civic life, whose main function is to garage our cars.
