When you boil an egg, the water is a heat transfer medium. It takes a point source of strong heat - the hot plate - and distributes it gradually and evenly around the whole egg. This to me is also the function of conversation, to dissipate strong points of difference between people gradually and evenly throughout society. When you don’t have conversations, it’s like trying to boil an egg without water. Extreme heat in selected spots, everywhere else cracks and breaks.
