4WD culture carries an assumption of getting closer to ‘nature’ (whatever that is). When in reality it’s using the landscape as a theme park for cars. Doing terrible and increasing damage as it goes, and grows (and it’s a current fad, growing exponentially). Most difficult 4WD tracks are easily traversible on foot. 4WD-ing really shows how useless cars are if you don’t have a serviceable road. You’re not getting closer to nature, you’re building roads into it to have fun in cars. The framing is all about ‘taming’ the landscape, beating it into submission with big diesel engines and wheels.
