Another way to think about travel. Visiting a place is a relationship with a place, just as humans have relationships. In fact a more complex relationship than human relationships in many ways. There are probably thousands of people in the world you could have an interesting human relationship with, including shagging each other. In reality we tend to settle on one. We don’t reserve the right to sample all of those thousands of people. And yet that’s what we do with travel. We feel it’s our right to have a relationship with all of these other places. Not to just admire them from afar. And worse, when we do ’experience’ them, we destroy them. As with human relationships, the magic rubs off really quickly. The ideal never matches the reality.
