I periodically talk about negative ion generators, because they're pretty amazing. Clear evidence now that this simple technology strips the air of pollution like dust and spores, but also bacteria and viruses. In fact it's so effective it removed 100% of airborne pathogens in a hospital in tests. It also deactivates bacteria sitting on surfaces. And it's just charged particles of air. I carry this portable ionbox model with me everywhere, it's great for public transport or events with lots of people, especially in flu season. (No, they don't pay me.) But it's also good in offices, and for hayfever sufferers. Reverse-cycle aircon units sometimes have it built-in now too, like Panasonic models. No filters to install or clean, and much cheaper than filter-based systems.
