People desperate for 'normal life' to return cling to the herd immunity idea like dog shit stuck on your shoe. And they don't seem to understand it. Basically they mean, this is all too hard, let people get infected, protect 'high risk' groups and everyone else will build up immunity through getting sick. Herd immunity is usually achieved with vaccines, not by letting people get sick. How it seems to be misunderstood: - there's no guarantee people getting Covid-19 will be immune afterwards - many will die even if they're not in a high-risk group - there is no disease (that I know of) that has ever been managed by naturally-acquired herd immunity - it's impossible to really isolate any group entirely from a pandemic microbe, so you're just leaving your highest-risk people as sitting ducks to millions of infected people.
