An El Niño means cooler ocean temperatures off Australia. But right now, that ocean is 2.5-3 degrees hotter than normal. That’s ENORMOUS. The difference between heat (energy), and temperature. 2.5-3 degrees doesn’t sound a lot. But that’s a gigantic amount of water so it needed a gigantic amount of energy to warm it, by that much. That energy is now being released, back onto us. The oceans have absorbed over 90% of the heat generated by our fossil fuel pollution. They can’t hold any more. The damage will accelerate because not only do we now have the heat from our current pollution, the oceans will start releasing the heat from our past pollution as well.
