I find that IT experts will generally tell you IT systems aren’t safe, particularly ones they didn’t build themselves, because it keeps them in a job and the centre of attention. A lot of the modern data hysteria seems a bit like that, just as hackers say they’re doing a public service by trying to break IT systems. The IT industry is a bunch of cowboys, still, often populated by people with a history of social disconnection, and fantasies about the online world that make them the hero characters. Anyway, I’ll probably opt in to this.
