Time began in 311 BC. Invented by this fella, Alexander the Great. Before him there was no 'river of time', where time 'flowed' along some linear path, there were just events, tied to geographical locations. The dynasty of so and so, of this part of Egypt etc. Alexander's conquests were so great though that they needed a way to try to coordinate new vast territories. I like to say our culture lives 'in' time (and space). This is what I mean, we think time flows along from past to present to future. So even today we'd probably say "ok, but now we know better, we can now place Alexander 'in' time, with a date". It's a fiction though, time is not a river. A river is not a river, it doesn't flow either! Time doesn't 'pass'.
