Donut Labs, an offshoot of a Finnish company, created an electric motor that is actually part of the wheel. No drivetrain or transmission needed. Check out the stats: 845 hp, over 4300 Nm of torque, and weighs only 40kg. And is incredibly efficient to boot. Donut has also just announced it’s solved solid state batteries, and will release them commercially early this year. Those are batteries that charge in about 5 minutes, and have more than double the energy density of standard batteries, so more than double the range. And about half the weight. You’ll be able to able to add 1500 km of range to your EV in 5 minutes. They’re also even safer as batteries, as there are no liquid electrolytes. With that energy density they’ll be able to be used even in long-haul aircraft, trains, trucks, boats, heavy towing etc.
