This bus from the 1950s had a novel form of battery to power it. It used a flywheel. Flywheels are a mechanical battery, you can store a lot of energy in a rotating heavy disk. NASA designed a space probe with a flywheel storage device, F1 have used them for kinetic energy recovery, etc.
