The new Sydney ring roads feel fantastic because the contrast with the old traffic jams is so nice. But in the longer term they’ll be a disaster, moving in exactly the opposite direction to urban design worldwide. As happens with water, if you improve supply (wider roads in this case), demand follows. Watch the car numbers keep growing. These roads will create monster traffic jams in years to come.
