Australia has some of the worst petrol in the world. It's one of the reasons we're slower to move to EVs, because car manufacturers dump their rubbish on us. But look at the second graph. Improving emissions standards and shifting to EVs will be a bit more expensive at first, but the country would save enormous money in the medium term. And even more in the long term (not shown). It's the same maths as solar - you need to look at more than just immediate cost.
