Words on a page are shadows. It takes some work to get your head around it I think. This shadow of a fern is not directly the word ‘fern’, but the idea of ‘representing’ the fern by dark marks on a pale surface came from shadows. Every book is full of the shadows of real things. Every book is a box of light and shadows.
