Think I may have posted this before. It’s from Dave Graeber and Marshall Sahlin’s book ‘On Kings’, published shortly before both of their passings. They were leading anthropologists. Both thought monarchies were the inescapable form of human governance, and even when we think we’ve removed them they’re still there, just using different names. The bit I’ve highlighted is a real slap in the face to the impossible idea of ‘the people’ being in charge of a society.
