For me the two greatest prisons for our minds. Clocks and maps. Clocks make us think time is a series of ‘instants’. Maps make us think space is a collection of ‘points’. We even mix them together, talking about ‘points in time’. I think about it this way - how would time ever ‘pass’ if the present was really a self-contained point? It would have to be moving and standing still at the same time. Similarly any point in space is connected to every other point in space, making a nonsense of the idea of a point. ‘Here’ is already part of ‘there’. These two illusions generate all the others I think, like our divide between mortality and immortality, individual and group, me here ‘in my head’ and the rest of the world etc etc.
