About a century ago Walter Lippmann made the obvious point that in a mature democracy, elections shouldn’t introduce much change. The ‘running’ of a country is done by skilled administrators, not the elected. Imagine a major company changing its CEO every 1-3 years, and expecting each new CEO to take the company in the completely opposite direction. How long do you think that company would last? That’s what elections do to countries. Now leaders struggle to last a year. They’re trends, like popular TV shows and songs are.
