It's not a coincidence I don't think that bipolar disorder flourishes in a world addicted to binary thinking. It's the same phenomenon. The medicalisation of depression over time has stripped away most of that wider context. Our societies are themselves bipolar, things are either manically amazing, or catastrophically bad.
