If thinking and language is mostly metaphors, here’s one that I think might matter. Knots versus boxes. We tend to think in box ways, we separate things and our ideas about things into boxes, with an inside and an outside. Organisational charts in companies are another example of box thinking, anything that separates and isolates, and then looks to try to connect the separations. Government is another example, a box with politicians and a box for the rest of us. What if we shifted to knots as the metaphors for how things work and how we think about them? To build and to know is then to weave or knot yourself in relationships with other things. There is no inside or outside. Weaving and knitting as models of reality. Women have historically done most of the weaving and knitting, possibly why these metaphors haven’t been as prominent as they should be, with women being marginalised.
