Pico Iyer sees something I don’t think many Australians themselves do. Living in Australia plugs you into something ancient, that works away at you unconsciously, by osmosis. You can physically feel it if you return from somewhere like Europe, where every square centimetre has been cultivated by human hands. Not Australia, a continent cut off for millenia, and retaining that ancient connection. Australians will ‘reconcile’ with Aboriginal Australia when they consciously begin to understand this. The landscape is deep time, it talks to you from there.
