Wisdom from physics. Light doesn't shine on things, it's part of things, stars produce it by squashing matter so much that it explodes. What we call a 'material' thing is actually a container of light - light is stuff too. If you cast a shadow, you're absorbing the light. It will burn you. The wisdom here I think is in seeing light and darkness not as illumination, but as the two fundamental states of all things. Death is not the end of life, it's the capturing and entombing of light. Life releases light. Again why stained glass windows in dark churches are I think more profound than we understand. And why for thousands of years we've described evil and good and life and death in terms of darkness and light.
