A game Kell and I play when watching Grand Designs is checking out what happens to the houses after they're finished and filmed. We haven't found one yet that wasn't sold within a year or two of being finished. People go bankrupt building the 'home of their dreams' and end up having to sell to become solvent again. Also a cautionary tale about using architects, who often seem to have very little idea about how to do something within a budget. I enjoy the show, but its weakness is it focuses on homes built by people who either have way more money than the average person, or way more debt.
