Our technology would allow all of us to work a lot less. But we don’t, because workers have little power. In the US, workers are not entitled to *any* leave, at all, unless their employer wants them to have it. I’d like to reframe the idiot idea of Daylight Saving this way, the true way. Why is it popular? Because people like an extra hour of daylight after work. What would have been the simplest way to do that? Us all knocking off an hour earlier over Spring and Summer. Why didn’t that happen? Because workers have no power. Instead employers campaigned to put the clocks forward, so you could work the same number of hours and still get that extra hour of evening light. So all of our circadian rhythms now get smashed twice a year, which is extremely bad for our health, simply because workers don’t have the power to work an hour less. And in true style, these same wage slaves defend the clock fiddling, rather than see that they were royally screwed by their employers, again.
