A re-creation of the view between the Blue Mountains, Southern Tablelands and Monaro, as observed by Dawes (1788-89), Mitchell (1830s), Hume and Hovell (1824). A 'burning mosaic', alternating patches of fresh green regrowth, golden cured grass, and blackened ash from recent fire. A standard technique Aboriginals used to engineer the landscape, the landscape wasn't wild. The entire continent was a curated estate, engineered for tens of thousands of years. Now mostly in ruins through more than two centuries of total neglect. Much of this soil is now at the bottom of the Tasman sea, washed there by rain falling on the eroded wastelands settler agriculture turned this land into.
