More than half of the world’s lakes are drying up. This is a major lake in Turkey, in the news this morning because it’s completely disappeared. The cause? Some of it climate change. But much more, it’s dams. The things we love to build, and make bigger. Dams stop the flow of water into the world’s lakes. Most dams are built for irrigation, a grossly inefficient use of water. Our local dams here in the Central West the same, far and away the biggest users of that water are irrigating farmers.
