I was paying my rates the other day, and looked at the itemised costs. And while my rates are quite high for a regional town, when I looked at the itemised bill I thought this is such a pittance for what I’m getting. The average family now spends two to three times my annual rates on dining out and take away food and drink every year. For my rates I get access to clean water, sewerage, my rubbish taken away, the various civic facilities of the town, including a library, roads, parks and gardens. Food inspections too, of beloved eateries. I hate kidult culture more every day, with its endless litany of whining complaint, living its whole life in a preening social media mirror, engaged in endless social comparison in the fight for social status. We’re spoiled children, the entire culture.
