Senior doctors in the US are now demanding that autonomous driving technology be prioritised. They see its impact as equivalent for health to preventing smoking. Humans are appalling drivers, in direct proportion to how wonderful they think they are. You are far, far more likely to be injured or killed on the road by a human driver.
