As a kid I asked my dad once what his favourite food was. He said 'soup'. I thought he was mad. Now I find myself actually agreeing with him (a bit late to tell him, but if you're reading somewhere...). The Japanese have a theory that the more liquid worked into a meal, the healthier and less fattening that meal will be. I think there's even research backing that up, the liquid really does great things to digestion. Thus the love of soup, in many Asian cultures. And it feels true as well, you hardly ever get that bleh feeling after eating soup, it sits really well inside you.
