A different way to see life. We privilege working life, because economies are all about work. Childhood we see as preparation for work, and old age we see as ‘retirement’, again from work. Without getting all New Age about it, we leave out all sense of what that work is FOR. Another way to view life is that it’s really about both ends of it. Childhood and old age. It’s at those ages that you get to enjoy the full scope of life, without being tied to the requirements of work. Those ages are what all that work is FOR. To make it possible to LIVE. Today those stages of life are under assault. We don’t have many children, and those we do have are bankrupt before they even start work, and we infect them repeatedly with Covid. The aged are tolerated while they feed the economy, with their travel and other spending. We’ve left thousands of them to die from Covid in aged care in the past 5 years, nobody gives a shit. Our previous PM said that we needed to protect ‘lives and livelihoods’ when he stopped doing anything about Covid. We’re so stupid now that not one prominent person said ‘um, wtf is that bullshit?’ Like we have to ‘balance’ our lives, against our economy. As if those were 2 separate things.
