I've been a bit quiet lately, and I think this Sherry Turkle TED talk mirrors my thoughts about FB at the moment. Like many new social media, it's being used to create connection, at the expense of conversation. Where are the conversations happening in our societies? Conversations are the blood in society’s body I think, without them societies collapse, as we’re seeing a bit at the moment, with hysteria and slogans filling the vacuum where conversations have disappeared. Government is a type of conversation, and it’s caught in the same problem. Turkle I think captures very well why we're absolutely addicted to connection, but not conversation. And what we might do about it. (If you don't have the 20 mins to watch, you can always click on 'transcript' to read the talk instead, takes only a few mins to get through.)
