We don’t always see ourselves as a ‘culture’ in the same way we see other cultures. But the defining thing about us I think, as a culture, is that we don’t actually occupy space. We like to move, travel, to go from A to B. Our towns and cities are slaves to our transport, we always want to be somewhere else. We treat the whole world like tourism, as something to be seen, rather than worked and occupied. Our towns and cities are ugly and polluted, our suburbs not much more than garages with accomodation attached. And then we want to ‘escape to the country’ or travel to see beautiful places, because we don’t make our own places beautiful. We don’t occupy space, we’re ‘nowhere’ men and women (a bit in the way John Lennon meant). And we consume other peoples’ beautiful spaces, those who actually occupy their space.
