Autonomous driving cars are very close, in fact you can see Bill Gates driving in one in this short video. Around London, so a very challenging environment. It performs beautifully. Cars and trucks are the only form of mass transport that haven’t been automated in this way, which is why they’re also the least safe method of transport. 1-30 tonne vehicles hurtling along with only humans in charge is a recipe for carnage. My own car can already do this in most situations, and you quickly appreciate it, it’s always got your back if your attention lapses. I could fall asleep at the wheel and the car would still look after me. Even small improvements make a huge difference. The other aspect to this which isn’t spoken about as much is the capacity for traffic management, if thousands or even millions of cars can then also talk to each other.
