There's a great episode of The Office that (unintentionally) debunks both the Economy, and small business. 3 of the office set up their own breakaway business, and undercut all the local big paper supply firms. They have next to no overheads, easy. But they go broke and collapse with exhaustion. A business only becomes sustainable when it caters for the social needs of its employees, not just makes money. Sustainable business is just social life, they're not 2 things. The Economy is just society. 75% of small businesses fail in less than 5 years.
