The origins of local government are fascinating. it wasn’t invented as some way to give local people a voice, or any of that other democracy claptrap. It was mostly invented to control disease. It’s a public health body. It collects your garbage, so you and your neighbours aren’t stewing in it. It removes your sewage (enough said). It provides clean water. It regulates the sanitation of food businesses. It removes stormwater. Etc.
