I was watching The Drum yesterday, and something about this person, Sandy Chong, didn’t seem quite right. (She’s the CEO of the Australian Hairdressing Council.) Her skin didn’t look real, just a featureless area of bland colour, smoothed out. And so checking another image of her, that turned out to be true. She’s using a live filter on her image, on the TV. To me this is seriously bad. It’s rampant for still shots on social media of course. But the fact it’s now just normal life, even on a serious national current affairs show, says something pretty alarming about our culture. This is what social media is doing to us, even our bodies and images of them are now being shaped directly by what’s ‘trending’.
