Politics has always been a battle between working people (nearly everybody), and a tiny financial elite. When working people get screwed very badly, it's very dangerous for the elites, who remember things like the French Revolution. So they run clown candidates for office pretending to stand for 'freedom', tapping into the widespread anger at how screwed everybody is. That freedom is really the removal of government, and replacement by a dictatorship, run by the clown. The dictatorship then screws working people even more.
