Trans-culture took historically quite common fun with androgyny, and tried to turn it into an actual identity. Social media enabled this, allowing it to bypass the usual slow percolation through various testing grounds of new ideas, and go straight to an independent unquestionable reality. I think it's the endgame of a ruthlessly individualist political and life philosophy, that stripped away collective mechanisms for defining identity and purpose. Forcing people to try to turn their own person and identity into a type of miniature nation-state. To give them a sense of agency in the world. Gender dysphoria is an actual thing. But most trans culture is not about gender dysphoria. It's old-fashioned androgyny dressed up as something much bigger than it is. People (rightly) rejecting rigid gender roles. Men were dandies in Elizabethan times. They didn't think they were actual women.
