The great Australian dream is to live on the coast. The ultimate lifestyle location. When I say Australians are basically still tourists in their own country, this is what I mean. This vast land with its spectacular variety of landscapes; the majority of Australians have no interest in it at all, except in mythical stories about the 'bush'. They want to live in suburbs that are like seaside holiday resorts. They hug the tiniest strip of land on every coast, and from there spend $60 billion a year flying to overseas holidays, when their seaside holiday lifestyle needs refreshing. Meanwhile those interior landscapes are being destroyed at alarming speed.
