The seductive and dangerous power of music is that it is the only pure imitation. It doesn’t look like or sound like other things. It is imitation for its own sake, which is why it’s like social heroin. And why it generates crowds. The naive describe this as simple mass enjoyment. But underneath every collective force in society you will find a music, somewhere. It’s the root DNA of all social patterning. Our buildings and roads and politics and money and weapons and cars and everything else are really tunes, embedded in things.
