Went out for dinner for Alice’s 12th birthday yesterday. I had to sneak this snap, they hate photos. Was lovely. They asked if we wanted to sit inside, which everybody else in the restaurant had chosen to do. In the same week we were all warned there’s a massive surge in Covid infections, the whole place was packed, not a mask anywhere, not a care about Covid in the world. I always want to ask, do you think about the person who might die if your own infection gets to them? Even if you don’t care about infecting yourself? But it’s a pointless conversation. 95% of people (empirically studied) simply follow what everybody else is doing. They never make an independent decision. That’s how high school works, and it doesn’t shift in adult life.
