Catacombs in Paris and Rome, tombs in Egypt. It’s important I think that historically people looked for the source of life and the afterlife in the ground beneath us, not up in the sky in some Heaven. Tombs and catacombs kept the dead amongst the living, to be entombed was thought to be the pathway to eternal life. Life comes from the Earth, and returns to it, to create new life. The Earth or ground is the source of all life, also I think the message of the movie Gravity, in that final scene with Sandra Bullock embracing the ground beneath her.
