A taste of how sophisticated and how disgusting cybercrime now is. Criminals now use AI to imitate loved ones’ voices on the phone. A friend relayed that her nephew had been called by one of these scammers, with his mother’s voice, saying she thought she was dying, and please call her on a given number. The number was one of those where you pay a fortune per minute, set up by the scammers, so that they pocketed the money for the call. One suggestion to counter this is for families to have a code word that can be repeated in a call between family members, to test if it’s legitimate. Thanks to Molly for the tip.
