The most interesting things in life are usually hidden in plain sight. Like this disruption, it tells us hugely interesting things about our way of life. I often post that as a culture we have no idea of what ‘place’ means. This shows it. Our towns are not really places, they’re nodes in big transport networks set up to serve cities. They were originally set up as places for workers to live who worked in agriculture and mining, to allow resources to be transported back to the cities. Not much has changed. The minute the road gets blocked towns are in crisis. They’re not places, they’re hubs in a transport network. Genuine places would not be so completely dependent on the road in and out of town.
